Llamas

Alpacas

The alpaca is native to South America, in the Andes mountain range, and is descended from the vicuña.

Used for their fur, there are two types of alpacas: suris and huacayas. Alpaca wool is a very high-quality fiber that is softer, warmer, stronger, and lighter than sheep's wool. It is internationally recognized as one of the finest and most luxurious fibers in the world.

Although these small camelids are not classified as ruminants (they have three stomachs instead of four like true ruminants), they still ruminate. They feed mainly on grass and hay. They can eat any type of grass, even low-quality grass. This is because their digestive system is much more efficient than that of other ruminants.
