Since the creation of the “Animal Competition” in 1864, breeders have been showcasing the very best of French livestock genetics.
The Best in Genetics
The animals selected by breeding organisations come from the most rigorous breeding programmes. They showcase the exceptional biodiversity of French genetics.
All breeding animals entered in the Concours Général Agricole are selected from collective breeding schemes approved by the French Ministry of Agriculture and implemented under its supervision, guaranteeing their high genetic value.
With superior genetic quality and commercial performance assured, the breeding animals admitted to the competition are also assessed on their morphology and how closely it conforms to the breed standard, with particular attention given to functional traits.
Seven animal species were represented at the 2026 Concours Général Agricole:

- Dogs
- Goats
- Horses
- Sheep
- Pigs
- Cats
In 2026, the cattle competition was exceptionally cancelled following a decision by the relevant breeding organisations.
A highly anticipated event, the animal competition is one of the flagship attractions of the Paris International Agricultural Show. Each year, the finest specimens parade in the judging rings before an attentive audience.
